It is situated on Hadrian's Wall, and is ideal for exploring the north Pennines, Eden Valley, the Scottish Borders and even as far south as the Lake District National Park. Gilsland lies within 10 miles of Housesteads Roman Fort and Vindolander, famous for the Roman parchment letters and settlement reconstruction. There are numerous castle ruins close by including Blenkinsopp, Thirlwall, Bellister and Bewcastle. The pretty market town of Brampton is within a 15 minute drive and Carlisle is just 30 minutes away. For a great day trip, visit the Lake District National Park, or spend a day in Cumbria. The scenery in this area is stunning, with wide panoramic vistas looking out on the Roman Wall which follows the Whin Sill escarpment, making this quiet corner of England a walker's and cyclist's delight.
